Include this ancient tower in your heritage tour of Elche city.

The Torre de la Calahorra, Calahorra Tower in Elche, a city offering three UNESCO-protected heritage sites, still preserves part of its original structure. It once formed part of the town's perimeter wall.

With a rectangular base, the Calahorra Tower is built of ashlar and masonry, although has not retained its original height due to partial collapse following an earthquake in 1829.

In the 19th century, windows in a neo-Arabic style were added, while its parapet was remodelled to include crenellations. Though nowadays it is a public building, its chequered history includes use as a grain store, a military barracks, and even as a stately residence.

Include the Calahorra Tower in your visit to Elche. It is definitely worth a stop to admire its imposing walls.
