In Alicante, right in Elche's historic centre, you have the Archaeological and History Museum of Elche (MAHE), a modern, educational museum that invites you to explore thousands of years of Elche's history, from the Neolithic period to the present day. Through touch screens, audiovisuals and interactive displays, you'll discover how the Iberians, Romans, Muslims and early Christians lived in the city.
The museum occupies two spaces that are worth a visit in their own right: the Traspalacio building and the majestic Altamira Palace. In the former, you have an impressive collection of archaeological pieces (don't miss the sculptures of the bull and the sphinx!) and reproductions of Iberian burials. From this area, you can also see the ruins of the medieval wall and an ancient aqueduct.
The second part of the museum, located in the Alcázar de la Señoría, covers more recent history: from the Christian conquest to the present day, including its Baroque splendour and the industrial revolution. Don't miss the Torre del Homenaje, where the Lady of Elche was exhibited in 2006 and where you can now see an exact replica.
If you visit MAHE, take the opportunity to stroll through the el Fondo Natural Park or have a drink on one of the terraces in the historic centre. Elche has many layers. Start discovering them!
