La Cruz Misional, or Mission Cross, situated in Planes in the province of Alicante, is a remarkable example of ancient wayside crosses. According to popular tradition, these crosses were placed at crossroads to drive away demons and signal the way to Christian villages. These crosses date back to the end of the 16th century, a major part of the ecclesiastical authorities’ campaign to evangelize the Moorish settlements.
Notable for its size, this roofed cross can be found beside the CV-700 route and stands on four steps, rising on a pillar decorated with a flower that recalls the classic Gothic rose windows. On the eastern side you’ll find the image of Christ, and to the west, the Virgin and Child.
If you want to carry on exploring, you’ll find another smaller, uncovered cross in Planes, with a fascinating base: an old wheat millstone that gives it a distinctive character. Even today, passing 'from Creu to Creueta' remains a local tradition, a way to reconnect with history, spirituality and the scenery of this beautiful corner of Alicante's interior.
