Plaza de los Chorros in Polop is a beautiful, historic square crowned by Font dels Xorros, a legendary fountain where the past fuses with the vitality of the present.

Plaza de los Chorros in Polop is a square with a fascinating history and undeniable charm. Sitting in the heart of the historic centre of Polop, the plaza is encircled by old and characterful buildings such as the handsome town hall, the venerable San Pedro Apóstol Parish Church and impressive Polop de La Marina Castle. It is, however, the central fountain, known as Los Chorros Fountain, that gives the plaza its distinctive character. The water originates from the Sirer and Terrer springs, whose waters are channelled from El Braçalet fountain. This historic Fountain, which dates to the year 1885 and that initially only had 11 spouts, has evolved over the years. In 1947, a renovation gave it no fewer than 221 spouts whose water falls elegantly into a channel. Over the years, the Fountain has become a symbol of the municipality of Polop and a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering.

Also known as Plaza dels Xorros, Plaza de los Chorros is much more than a square: it is a vibrant place that breathes history where people come together. Visitors and locals alike come here to relax and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. Not only is it a beautiful conduit to the past, it is at the heart of local cultural activities and festivals, which bring the peaceful atmosphere to life. The fountain is a tribute to engineering and history, bearing testament to how one small element can speak of the past and the present. It is a place where the words of writer Gabriel Miró, which are immortalised above the fountain, come to life: “water of the village, of this village, that Sigüenza drank 20 years ago. It has a sweetness that leaves a bitter aftertaste, which is actually chemical, which is yet more lyrical still…”. Plaza de los Chorros is a peaceful spot that forms part of Polop’s identity and enriches the spirit of everyone that comes to visit.
