The Cuevas de la Villa, or Caves of Requena, Valencia, are hidden beneath the medieval quarter or old town known as the Barrio de la Villa. They are a series of underground cellars, excavated during the Muslim period, which were mainly used to store food. Once belonging to the houses built above them, these caves are now open for you to visit!
Caves of Requena
These 22 caves were in use between the 12th and 17th centuries, before being rediscovered and restored in the second half of the 20th century. Today, you can go on a tour to learn about their different uses and history.
After signing up for this fascinating tour, first you will enter a central hall, from where you access some caves that were once used as an ossuary for El Salvador Church. You will then arrive at the Pósito, or communal grain store. This was a space of huge importance because it housed the grain for new crops and making bread. The town’s caves are perfect for this type of storage as the temperature and humidity inside are fairly constant.
You will then come upon a cave with a well, which provided water to the homes on the surface. There are also wine cellars containing earthenware jars for ageing and preserving wine. Other items and tools related to wine production were also stored here.
Come and be amazed by the Caves, and discover how much more there is to see in Requena! Make these caves part of your once-in-a-lifetime getaway!
