The Route of the 7 Villages of Tinença de Benifassà
Tinença de Benifassà Natural Park is one of northern Castellón’s true showstoppers, prized for its striking variety of scenery and rich wildlife. Up here, rugged peaks, deep gorges and dense woodland create a home for species such as Bonelli’s eagle, Iberian ibex and even ancient yew trees.
Scattered through this dramatic landscape are small villages that retain a strong medieval feel, together forming what’s known as the Tinença de Benifassà. This historic area is made up of the villages of La Pobla de Benifassà, Ballestar, Fredes, El Boixar, Coratxà, Castell de Cabres and Bel. All seven can be explored on a circular walking route—a perfect candidate for your next great outdoor adventure.
The 7 Villages Route is a loop that follows wonderfully scenic trails. The full circuit is around 75 km, so it’s best tackled in stages. You can take it slowly and enjoy each stop, or pack it into fewer, tougher days—it’s completely up to you. Just bear in mind the terrain is steep in places, with plenty of climbs and descents, so a good level of fitness, the right kit and some experience on this kind of route are well worth having.
The route typically starts in El Boixar, heading first to Coratxà. From there, it continues on to Castell de Cabres and then Bel. Next up is La Pobla de Benifassà, before you carry on to El Ballestar and Fredes, looping back to El Boixar to finish.
