Los Arcos Aqueduct, the Aqueduct of the Arches, in Bejís, Castellón, is one of the town’s most distinctive heritage sites and a clear reminder of the important role water has played throughout its history.
This monumental structure once formed part of Bejís’ water supply system and served the village for centuries.
Of Roman origin, the aqueduct originally featured seven semicircular arches, five of which are still standing today. Together with the initial retaining wall, the visible remains stretch for around 82 metres, although the original layout exceeded 125 metres and included both open-air and underground channels that carried water into the town.
Although it is an aqueduct, the structure has much in common with a bridge, with cutwaters on every pier and buttresses on the odd-numbered supports. The arches and piers are built from dressed stone blocks, while other sections were constructed using masonry.
Los Arcos Aqueduct is a must-see on any visit to Bejís and a key site for understanding the town’s past—as well as a lovely spot for a walk where history and landscape come together.
