This fortified farmhouse in Burriana has the most fascinating past.

Torre de Carabona in Burriana speaks of the rich heritage and history in this part of Plana Baixa. Though called a tower (torre), this monument is actually a farmhouse dating back to Muslim times. Its purpose was to protect the population living detached from the main urban centre from any potential pillages and attacks.

A settlement with the most inhabitants in Burriana would grow around the building. Following the Conquest, James I gave the property to the Order of Sant Jordi d'Alfama. It was later passed on to the Order of Montesa and then a private owner.

Torre de Carabona is wonderfully preserved. In the late 18th century, a number of simple structures were added to the building. From what can be gleaned from the main building, the original farmhouse was not as tall with additional floors added at a later date. Nowadays it is a rectangular building with three floors.

Beyond this defensive farmhouse, there is a great deal to see and explore in Burriana, including Templat, El Salvador church, the bustling fishing port, watchtowers overlooking the sea and Clot de la Mare de Deu, a spectacular wetland that is home to all sorts of wildlife.
