Discover a chapel in Caudiel that dates back to the 15th century.

El Socós chapel in Caudiel, also known as San Roque chapel, dates back to the 15th century. In fact, it is one of the few remaining examples of the early Gothic style in El Alto Palancia. The chapel was built using a system of arches and a wooden roof. Over the years, it has had various names, such as San Abdón and Senen chapels.

In its early years, eight monks – friars from the Order of San Agustín – lived in the chapel. A number of straw lofts were connected to the chapel by a door and used as dwellings. The friars remained in Caudiel until the mid-16th century, when they moved to Agustinos de Nuestra Señora del Socós Convent in Jérica.

For some time now, El Socós chapel has not been a place of any type of worship. The artistic legacy of the Caudiel chapel that has survived the passing of the years is now housed in San Juan Bautista parish church: specifically an altarpiece dating to the year 1622, which is now in one of the church’s chapels.

Interestingly, the chapel was first named Nuestra Señora del Socorro to protect a young child possessed by the devil. The image depicts Madre de Dios with a staff in her hand.
