What is now San Sebastián chapel in Cervera del Maestre was once the centre of the local wool industry.

Originally a civic building, San Sebastián chapel is an historic site located in Cervera del Maestre in the province of Castellón. It was constructed in the 14th century by the Order of Montesa for the wholesale trade of the wool produced in Maestrazgo. During this period, the wool industry was a source of great economic power.

It wasn’t until the 17th century that renovation work started on the building to turn it into the place of worship you can see today. The chapel is dedicated to San Sebastián, the patron saint of the village.

One of the chapel’s defining features is its façade. A low stone arch rises above the door through which you enter the building. The Order of Montesa coat of arms is engraved into the stone above the door while that of the Senyera is engraved into the arch.

The chapel comprises a large rectangular plan which is divided into three spaces by round and pointed arches of different sizes supported by octagonal pillars. The chapel has recently been restored and its doors are open to visitors so you can discover its radiant beauty.

If you come to Cervera del Maestre to see the chapel, make the most of your time in the village to see other sights of interest. Castillo de Cervera del Maestre, for instance, a Moorish fortress with a great curtain wall, and Molí de l’Oli, an information centre that will show you what olive oil production looked like in the past.
