The Vole and Bacalá Festival in Jérica is known for its traditional hand-rung bells at night and the sharing of wine, bread, walnuts and cod.

La fiesta del Vole y la Bacalá, the Vole and Bacalá Festival, is held in the municipality of Jérica, in the El Alto Palancia area of Castellón. Come and discover it for yourself.

When is the Vole and Bacalá Festival in Jérica?

The event takes place on the Friday before the third Sunday in September as part of the celebrations in honour of the Divina Pastora. Its origins lie in the tradition of the town’s former bell ringers, who would climb the tower with very little light or protection from the cold and eat wine, bread, walnuts and cod to help keep warm.

Over time, local residents began gathering to watch the bells being rung, and the tasting was extended to those outside the tower. Today, the festival in Jérica keeps that tradition alive with hand-rung bells at night and the sharing of the same food among those attending.
