We invite you to visit Castillo, la Ermita de San Roque o Santa Águeda la Vieja y las antiguas murallas de Jérica, the Castle, San Roque or Santa Águeda la Vieja Chapel and the old walls of Jérica in the province of Castellón. You’re sure to be amazed by this historic site.
At the highest point of the town stands the Keep of Jérica Castle, also known as San Juan Tower. Sturdy and square, built with finely cut stone and rammed earth walls, it once guarded the destination from its impressive height of 640 metres. Surrounding it are the remains of walls, gates and turrets that have shaped Jérica’s growth since medieval times, with access points like San Juan Gate, San Joaquín Gate, Santa Ana Gate and La Sala Gate. Put these must-see spots on your list of things to see in Jérica in a day!
At the lower part of the site, on the grounds of the former main mosque, stands San Roque Chapel, which dates back to the 13th century. Originally built as a church during the Reconquista, it was later expanded with Gothic elements like its polygonal apse and ribbed vaults. Today, its irregular layout and the traces of each construction phase tell the story of the village, stone by stone.
Wandering through this area is like stepping back in time, as you stroll along narrow, winding streets that curl around the castle. It’s the perfect place to discover the medieval essence of Jérica in El Alto Palancia!
