The walls encircling Morella’s historic centre hold centuries of history. Step inside and discover what lies beyond.

Morella is one of the most beautiful towns in Spain and a must-visit if you are keen to explore inland Region of Valencia. The historic centre of the town is demarcated by 2km of town walls. The town walls predate the Conquest of Jaume I, though the structures you can see today date back to between the 14th and the 15th centuries. The walls have borne witness to countless wars, assaults and attacks and seen important historical figures enter through the city gates.

When you step inside the walled town, Morella will blow you away with its steep, pebbled streets that will transport you back many centuries in time. This is a destination in the province of Castellón that is defined by its great historic heritage. The most important site is doubtlessly the Castle. Overlooking Morella from a height, this spectacular fortress was built to make the most of the natural rock form. Remains from the Neolithic have been found here, though it was in the Roman and Visigoth periods that the Castle that you can see today started to take shape.

The walled town is also home to Santa María La Mayor Basilica, an extraordinarily beautiful example of Mediterranean holy art. And this is just the start of a long list of sites that are calling out to be explored. Come and visit Morella’s historic centre, get lost as you wander the streets, nose into each and every corner and admire one of the most prized destinations in the Region of Valencia.
