More information

Located in Villafranca del Cid in the province of Castellón, Museo de la Piedra en seco is a museum dedicated to dry stone, a type of construction method that has had an important impact on the local economy and landscapes.

The art of dry stone has been practised for years in Villafranca del Cid. Large quantities of rocks were removed from the land, such as to be able to grow crops, which local artisans skilfully used to create a highly unique style of architecture.

The landscapes of Alt Maestrat are defined by constructions created using the technique, from walls and huts to plots, pools, ponds and much more.

The museum is the first of its kind in the Region of Valencia. It is housed in the Gothic Lonja, which is itself a point of interest in the municipality. The museum displays tools used in the construction process as well as models, information panels and videos to help you gain an understanding of how structures are built using the technique.

Beyond the exhibitions, the museum runs three tours that will immerse you further into the world of dry stone. The first, Pla del Mosorro, focuses on constructions used by shepherds and cattle farmers. The second, Les Virtuts, is dedicated to arable and tenant farmers. And the third, La Parreta, will take you on an exploration of a forest of the same name.

If you’re in the area, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this museum.
