Alpuente’s Castle and Walls are an historic defence structure listed a Site of Cultural Interest. A must-visit for tourists.

Castillo y Murallas, Castle and Walls in Alpuente, comprise a structure that has played a fundamental role in the history of the village. The ruins of the Castle sit on a prominent rock, the silent witness of the rich history that dates back to medieval times. Strategically located, the Castle still has an impressive tower and cisterns that speak of its past as the head of a Taifa, the kingdoms in the time of Muslim rule. Over the centuries, the Castle has undergone modifications and reconstructions that have had an impact on the structure.

The Walls surround and protect the historic centre of the village, embracing the streets and buildings with its defence structure. Approximately 500m long and with no fewer than 14 towers, the Walls stretched from north to south, bringing the early Muslim town under the protection of the fortress. Though some parts of the Walls are in poor condition, you can spot their ruins among the houses, giving you an excellent opportunity to walk the cobbled streets and discover the remains of its medieval past. The historic and cultural importance of the Walls has been officially recognised, as they are part of the Site of Cultural Interest. We’d recommend visitors set off on an exploration of Alpuente’s medieval past to discover the evolution of its defence architecture throughout history.
