The ruins of Mogente castle give you an idea of what the fortress would have been like in its heyday. Come and take a look around.

In the mountains surrounding Mogente sit the ruins of a fortress that protected the town for centuries. Castillo de Mogente will transport you back hundreds of years to a time when a majestic castle used to sit proudly atop the mountains in this part of La Costera in the province of Valencia.

Recent excavation work has concluded that the castle was built in the Almohad period. A variety of techniques and styles, however, can be seen in the structure.

The castle was constructed during the period when the Moors inhabited Spain, before being seized by the Crown of Aragon in the year 1244. Over the coming centuries, it would be besieged during the War of the Two Peters and the Revolt of the Brotherhoods. Though it was practically razed to the ground, some sections of the defence wall descending to the town and some turrets are still standing.

Torre Mora, also known as Torre de Coloms, is currently the part of the castle that is in the best state of conservation. This Albarrana tower was used to defend the fortress and work has been done to strengthen and protect it.

If you enjoy hiking, we’d recommend climbing up the mountain to take a look at Torre dels Coloms and the ruins of the castle and wall. Use your imagination and you’ll be transported to another time where constant conflict called for robust structures to protect the town.
