Come and discover the remarkable traditions of this Holy Week.

La Setmana Santa or the Holy Week of Ontinyent, in Valencia, dates back to the 15th century and is a celebration rich in heritage and tradition. Come and discover it for yourself!

What are the main events that occur during Holy Week in Ontinyent?

Among its most distinctive elements are the ròssegues, baroque mourning garments with three-metre-long trains worn as part of the town’s traditional attire, and the creus d’ous, decorative crosses made using eggs, plants and coloured earth.

The soundscape of the celebration is marked by the dejuni dels campaners, a period during which the church bells fall silent in mourning from Maundy Thursday until the Gloria on Holy Saturday. They are replaced by the sharp wooden clatter of the trebanelles. Key events include the Procesión del Silencio through the historic Vila neighbourhood, the Encuentro Doloroso, and the large Holy Burial procession, which features sculptures by Mariano Benlliure. The programme of Holy Week in Ontinyent blends religious solemnity with popular traditions such as the Night of the Panderos and the enjoyment of the traditional mona de Pascua.
