When does the Romería de San Esteban in Ontinyent take place?

These festivities are held on the first weekend of June and begin on Saturday with the lighting of a bonfire in the San Rafael neighbourhood. The fire recalls the flames that once lit the path to the hermitage and is accompanied by fireworks and shared evening meals, including the traditional cacauà.

The Romería de San Esteban continues on Sunday with the pilgrimage to the Sierra Grossa, where an open-air mass is held followed by a popular countryside lunch. The programme also includes a mountain folklore festival featuring traditional games such as greasy pole contests, sack races, poetry readings and traditional dances, keeping alive the spirit of the historic llumeners who have preserved this tradition in the natural mountain surroundings.
