Come to Serra, a small town surrounded by spectacular scenery, to see a tradition in which the tranquil summer night is transformed with fireworks, firecrackers and music.

Located next to Sierra Calderona natural park, Serra is a pretty little place that is a popular walking spot. The town hosts an Event of Provincial Tourist Interest, Fiesta de San Roque, which is the most popular event in the town’s festival calendar. The highlight of the festivities usually takes place at midnight on the night of the 15 and the morning of the 16 August: the image of San Roque is carried down from the chapel to the houses of the main clavarios.

A haze of light, noise and firecrackers follow the image as it makes its way through the streets. The chapel is lit up and appears to sparkle in the night sky.

The event is set to the sound of the dolçaina and the tabalet – two traditional instruments that you’ll often hear at Valencian festivities – creating an atmosphere that will get all your senses tingling.

The San Roque clavarios are tasked with putting on the spectacle. And what a spectacle it is. You can expect plenty of mascletaes, firecrackers and even a correfoc, a parade in which fireworks are set off. You also won’t want to miss the paella competition.
