Lonja de la Seda in València is a 15th century monument that showcases the historic importance of the silk trade for the city.

If you enjoy delving into the history of the destinations you explore, Lonja de la Seda – known as the Silk Exchange in English – is a must-visit during your time in València. One of the most iconic buildings in the city, it is a masterpiece of Valencian Gothic architecture. Built in the late 15th century, the exchange was the centre of the prosperous silk trade.

The grandiose architecture reflects the golden age in which it was built. Sala de Contratación is the most beautiful of all the spaces in the exchange. This magnificent hall is defined by eight columns that prop up the complex vaulted ceiling, dividing the space into three areas. Torreón Central, a tower, houses the chapel and the prison where merchants who couldn’t pay their dues were held. And finally there is Consulado del Mar, a hall with an extravagant sculpted wooden coffered ceiling and a painting by Espinosa hanging on the wall. The outdoor space, Patio de los Naranjos, completes the site.

In 1996, UNESCO listed the Silk Exchange a World Heritage Site, recognising the architectural, sculptural and historic value of the building that has been beautifully conserved so that you can relive the wonders of this part of history. A monument that is well worth a visit during your time in València city.
