The former Santo Domingo Convent is one of Xàtiva's best preserved Gothic buildings. Come and explore it!

The Ex Convento de Santo Domingo, the former Santo Domingo Convent, in Xàtiva, Valencia, was one of the city’s main centres of cultural life during the Middle Ages, at a time when Xàtiva was the second most important city in the Kingdom of Valencia. Come and discover this fascinating place!

What is the former Santo Domingo Convent in Xàtiva like?

Founded between the 13th and 14th centuries at the initiative of King Jaume II, the former Dominican convent stood out for the importance of its spaces, including a vast Cistercian refectory and an elegant chapter house.

After the confiscations of 1837, the complex gradually fell into decline, and only the church survived. Gothic in origin, it features a single nave with pointed diaphragm arches and has since been restored, bringing back much of its original character.

Today, visitors can explore the church, a reconstruction of the chapter house and part of the cloister. The site also houses an engaging collection dedicated to the traditional Corpus Christi celebrations. It’s an essential stop for understanding the history and heritage of Xàtiva, and a place that deserves a spot on any visit to the city.
