Travel back through Xàtiva’s long and interesting past at Museo del Almodí.

Xàtiva has a fascinating history waiting to be explored, and this is a wonderful way to discover it. Step back in time at the Museu de l’Almodí, Museo del Almudín, where you can trace the earliest remains from the Palaeolithic through to the period when this town formed part of al-Ándalus.

The museum is housed in one of Xàtiva’s most significant historic buildings, originally a grain exchange built in the mid-16th century. Its architecture is particularly impressive, with an original Gothic façade and an exceptional Renaissance courtyard featuring Ionic columns. Today, the Almudín is a modern exhibition space dedicated to archaeology. Among its collections are reproductions of the earliest finds from Cova Negra, as well as Iberian, Roman, Visigothic and Muslim artefacts. One standout piece is the Arabic basin, which is one of the most important items in the collection.

The Museo del Almudín brings together a wide range of objects that reflect Xàtiva’s past. One of the most prominent periods represented is the Islamic era. During Muslim rule, the town experienced a time of great splendour, which explains the wealth of remains preserved in the museum—from the arches of public baths to

the double arch of the Pinohermoso palace, along with numerous ceramic pieces.

For those interested in ancient history, the museum also displays very old items such as an Iberian male head from the 4th century BC and Roman funerary inscriptions.

The Museo del Almudín is the perfect place to uncover the intriguing history of the marvellous town of Xàtiva.
