The Misteri d’Elx is a cultural treasure performed each August in the Basilica of Santa María in Elche. Medieval in origin, this musical drama portrays the Dormition, Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin Mary through a performance that's fully sung in Old Valencian and Latin.

The production is especially striking due to its complex aerial stage machinery, with devices such as the Magrana descending from the dome of the basilica. It is the only work of its kind to have been kept alive without interruption since the 15th century, surviving even the bans imposed by the Council of Trent thanks to a special privilege granted by Pope Urban VIII.
