A church situated in the centre of Ibi that opens its doors to visitors.

In the heart of Ibi’s historic centre, in Plaza de la Iglesia, you will find Iglesia Parroquial de la Transfiguración del Señor, La Transfiguración del Señor Church. This is a monumental church that hosts plenty of religious and traditional events throughout the year, namely El Salvador Festival in August and Moors and Christians.

The exact date the original building was constructed is not known, but records show that the church existed in the 16th century. The Archbishop Juan de Ribera supported an extension of the place of worship, which was consecrated in 1602. With the passing of time, the structure was damaged due to episodes like the 1620 earthquake in Alcoy, whose repercussions were also felt in Ibi and the church. Following a number of restorations and remodels undertaken over the years, the church you can see today is a Neoclassical building from the late 18th century that has one nave divided into five sections that are soberly decorated.

If you are wondering what to see in Ibi, don’t forget to visit La Transfiguración del Señor Church. Make sure you look out for the mural Joaquín Oliet painted in the presbytery, as well as the beautiful carvings of the patron saints San Salvador and Virgen de los Desamparados. Come and marvel at this example of historic heritage that has survived the passing of time and is still standing today.
