Here’s everything you need to know to enjoy the rice fields of l’Albufera de Valencia. Get ready for some truly spectacular scenery.

Walking through Valencia’s rice fields means stepping into a landscape that changes colour with every season. Make your way into l’Albufera Natural Park, a unique ecosystem that stretches across places such as Alfafar, Sedaví, Massanassa, Catarroja, Albal, Silla, Sollana, Sueca, Cullera, Albalat de la Ribera and València, including its district of El Palmar.

With this short guide, you’ll uncover the secrets of one of Europe’s most important wetlands.

When is the best time to see Valencia’s rice fields?

Valencia’s rice fields are a living spectacle. After the winter mudding process, which takes place from January to February, and a period when the land rests in spring, May marks the return of water for sowing.

In summer, the fields stretch out in deep green before gradually turning golden ahead of the harvest in September. Then, between November and December, the year comes to a close with the perellonà, when the fields are flooded and become an endless mirror.

Albufera de Valencia: rice fields and birdlife

The biodiversity found in the rice fields of l’Albufera is extraordinary. For birdwatching lovers, this is a very special place to spot species such as the greater flamingo, purple heron, little ringed plover and glossy ibis, among many others.

Restored areas such as Tancat de la Pipa and Tancat de Milia act as green filters and wildlife refuges, offering wonderful opportunities to enjoy the area’s biodiversity.

Routes through Valencia’s rice fields

If you’d like to experience the area in a more active way, there are plenty of options to suit every pace.

  • Walking routes through the rice fields: you’ll find a wide range of routes around the natural park, although it’s worth remembering to protect yourself from the sun. You can check several options here.

  • Cycling routes through Valencia’s rice fields: use this guide to explore this flat, open area on two wheels.

  • A must: head up to Muntanyeta dels Sants, the only hill on the Albufera plain, for sweeping views over Valencia’s rice fields.

Other useful information

Where can you watch the sunset over the rice fields in l’Albufera?

Every corner of the park has something special, but the Gola de Pujol jetty and the paths around Puerto de Catarroja offer an epic sunset view, with the sky glowing over the water.

Can you visit Valencia’s rice fields with children?

Yes, they’re a great choice for a family day out. Valencia’s rice fields are crossed by flat, safe routes, and children will love seeing birds, crabs and frogs up close, as well as learning where the rice in their paella comes from.

What type of rice is grown in l’Albufera de Valencia?

This is the home of the Arroz de Valencia Designation of Origin. The best-known varieties are bomba, senia and albufera, each with its own qualities, although all of them are excellent at absorbing the flavours of the sea and market gardens.

How to get to Valencia’s rice fields by public transport

You can take EMT Valencia bus lines 24 and 25, which bring you right into the heart of the natural park, in districts such as Pinedo, El Saler and El Palmar. Another option is to take a Renfe Cercanías train to stations such as Silla or Catarroja and start your route from there.
