Explore Cocentaina Castle and enjoy incredible vistas it affords over El Comtat county.

Perching on San Cristóbal Hill in the municipality of Cocentaina is Cocentaina Castle. Today, a Gothic-style military tower is all that remains of the previous fortress. Built in the 13th to 14th centuries, the tower has a square plan and two storeys. It is the only example of a tower of its kind to still be standing, and is inspired by the Italian towers of the same period.

Cocentaina Castle was built on San Cristóbal Hill for purely strategic reasons. From the top, you can see far and wide over the area, making it the perfect place to spot the arrival of enemies. The settlers of the past have historically been keen to hold the area which we now know as Cocentaina.

In the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, an Iberian settlement sat on the top and the slopes of the hill. In the 10th century, in the heart of the Islamic period, an early architectural structure was built: today, remains of a section of the curtain wall are all that are standing.

Cocentaina Castle is open to visitors: just get in contact with the Tourism Office beforehand to plan your visit. This local historic heritage site is a symbol of the identity of the town. If you’re wondering what to see in Cocentaina when you visit, follow Montcabrer trail up to the Castle and breathe in the incredible views over the landscape.
