Moors and Christians Festival in Muro de Alcoy: events and celebrations
Dating back to the 19th century, the festival takes place every year on the second weekend in May, when the town’s eleven comparsas, the local groups that represent the Moorish and Christian sides. parade through the streets to the sound of pasodobles and Moorish marches.
One of its most distinctive traditions is L’Angelet, a local child who opens the festivities by reciting the poem La Anunciación. The festival’s embassies are another important part of its cultural heritage, particularly L’Ambaixada del Tonell, which has been passed down by word of mouth since the early 20th century. The celebrations draw to a close on the third weekend in May, when a pilgrimage carries the town’s patron saint back to her chapel. The story and traditions behind the festival can also be explored throughout the year at the Festero museum.
