Want to dive deep into the Region of Valencia’s diverse local wildlife? Note down the places where you can spot different species of butterfly.

The sheer diversity and beauty of the butterflies that live in the Region of Valencian is astounding. If you see yourself as an eco tourist and you feel at home in the embrace of nature, you can’t miss exploring the natural habitat of these beautiful creatures. We’ve gathered all the information you need to prepare an excursion to some of Valencia’s prime butterfly spots.

Butterflies in the Region of Valencia: where to find them

Just as keen bird watchers go in search of the perfect spot for avian observation, knowing the ideal places to observe and photograph butterflies in the Region of Valencia is also important.

We recommend checking what the best times of year are for butterfly spotting in the destination you choose, although it tends to be in spring and summer. Make sure you dress comfortably and bring your binoculars, and don’t forget to share your butterfly photos with us by using the hashtag #MediterraneanAttitude when you post online.

Alicante

Sierra Mariola Natural Park is a great place for butterflies. We recommend following the Blue Route, near river Vinalopó. This is an easy hiking trail that you can do with the kids, exposing them to the delights of wildlife from a young age. Let’s now make our way to Font Roja Natural Park, an enchanting habitat home to nocturnal butterflies.

Next, our tour of the local fauna brings us to another great observation spot in El Clot de Galvany, in Elche. Amid the dunes and pine forests, this coastal wetland boasts important native species that are vital for maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

Valencia

Our butterfly tour around the Region of Valencia now takes us to the province of Valencia where we visit the Butterfly Oasis in Chera - Sot de Chera Natural Park. This insect haven is designed so that butterflies can fly freely and find their own food and shelter - it is undoubtedly a highlight on the tour!

Another exceptional place where you’ll feel right at home if you love these winged insects is “Parpalló - Borrell” Natural Municipal Area in Gandia. Why not plan a wildlife excursion here that culminates in a delicious meal, feasting on one of the local delicacies, the mouthwatering fideuà?

Castellón

To end our tour chasing butterflies in the Region of Valencia, we find ourselves in Penyagolosa Natural Park. Here, amongst meadows, wooded areas and ponds, you’ll find various thriving butterfly species. Visit during the warmer months of the year and you’ll be able to admire the butterflies’ bright colourful wings as they flutter.

Come to the Region of Valencia to discover the immensely diverse butterfly population that flourishes here, and become an ambassador for Valencia’s wild and natural side.
