Come and explore a one-of-a-kind route in Castellón, where striking sculptures sit out in the open countryside. It’s a brilliant spot for a few standout photos!

If you fancy a walk in the fresh air and are after something a bit out of the ordinary, this one’s well worth a look. The Via Set Cadires, or route of the seven giant chairs, in La Plana Alta (Castellón), brings together art and landscape in a way that feels almost otherworldly. Go and see it for yourself!

What is this route of seven giant chairs in Castellón all about?

This is a sculptural installation that goes far beyond a simple oversized photo spot. It’s a tribute to slow travel and to that familiar local habit of sitting outside in the evening, enjoying the cooler air as the day draws to a close.

With that idea in mind, a group of artists created seven oversized versions of traditional chairs, inspired by the classic wooden designs with woven seats, as part of the open-air sculpture collection in La Plana de l’Arc. Each one features engravings that reflect the surrounding vegetation. The route of the seven giant chairs takes something ordinary and turns it into something quite special, placing these brightly coloured chairs in landscapes that invite you to pause for a while.

Where are the giant chairs in Castellón?

This artistic route stretches across seven towns linked by the ancient Vía Augusta, with each of the seven giant chairs carrying its own meaning:

  • Vilafamés (red chair): The Way of Mother Earth, surrounded by kermes oak, a shrub also featured in the chair’s engraving.

  • Cabanes (orange chair): The Way of Passion and Desire, with views over the Desert de les Palmes Natural Park. The chair is adorned with the palmetto, a dwarf palm found throughout the area.

  • Vall d’Alba (yellow chair): A symbol of determination, engraved with an almond tree, a defining feature of the landscape.

  • Benlloc (green chair): Linked to balance and the scent of vines and pine. The vine is the plant depicted on the chair.

  • Vilanova d’Alcolea (blue chair): Dedicated to the wisdom of ancient olive trees, which appear on the chair and have shaped the area for centuries through olive oil production.

  • La Torre d’en Doménec (purple chair): The Way of Intuition, marked by the fragrant fig tree engraved on the chair.

  • Les Coves de Vinromà (white chair): The “Gateway to the stars”, featuring the carob tree, deeply rooted in the Mediterranean landscape.

Tips for a sustainable visit to the route of the seven giant chairs in Castellón

The route of the seven giant chairs is best enjoyed at an unhurried pace. To make the most of it, set out on foot or by bike, it’s the best way to take in the landscape while respecting the surroundings.

These pieces are delicate works of art, so take in their design and the intricate woven detail from ground level, and avoid climbing on them or standing on the seat. Park only in designated areas, be mindful of local residents and, of course, leave no litter behind.

This open-air gallery brings together seven giant chairs, local culture and the warm character of La Plana Alta at every stop. And if you’re after more wonderful ideas, don’t forget to sign up to our newsletter!
