Exconvento de la Merced is now home to a fascinating archaeological museum exhibiting finds from the local area.

As you wander around Burriana, you will soon come across buildings and monuments that tell the story of the town’s and even the county’s past.

One of these sights is La Merced, a former convent that has been declared an historic monument of provincial interest. The building is steeped in history. Over the years, it has undergone various renovations and in 1991 it was transformed from a place of worship into a cultural centre named Centre Cultural la Mercè, giving a new home to the town archaeological museum, Museu Arqueològic Municipal.

The archaeological finds discovered in different sites across the county of Plana Baixa were gradually catalogued and organised into exhibits. You can now enjoy displays of pieces dating back to the Neolithic, Iberian, Roman, Arab and Medieval periods. An incredible way to travel back in time and discover the history enveloping the town and surrounding area.

If you find yourself in Burriana, make sure you stop off at this iconic building to take a look back at the town’s great legacy. You won’t want to miss it.
