La Torre de los Moros, the Moorish tower in Vinaròs, Castellón, is one of those places that lets you travel through time. Situated on the side of the Puig de la Misericordia mountain, just below the Virgen de la Misericordia y San Sebastián church. With its peerless views over the plains and coastline, this charming structure is an absolute must-see on your list of things to do near Vinaròs!
The site of the Moorish tower housed Iberian settlements as long ago as the sixth-seventh centuries BC, and you can still find ceramic remains in the Puig archaeological site. The Islamic era brought a small rural population, during which this six-metre-wide rectangular tower became a local bastion, with a cistern, several floors and portholes for defence. During the 16th and 17th centuries it was utilised and modified, and this can be clearly seen in its walls. So if you fancy a trip back through hundreds of years of local activity, add this to your next hiking route!
