Take a look around one of the best conserved monastic buildings in the Region of Valencia and discover one of the artistic, historic and religious treasures of the area.

Located in Alfauir in the province of Valencia, San Jerónimo de Cotalba monastery sits atop Cotalba, a small hill some 8km from Gandia. The monastery is privately owned but opens its doors to visitors so you can soak up all the history, artistry and views over the spectacular landscapes.

Listed a Site of Cultural Interest, San Jerónimo de Cotalba is one of the best conserved monastic buildings in the Region of Valencia. Your attention will be drawn by the combination of architectural styles the monastery accumulated over the years. Construction started in the late 14th century with the original Medieval Gothic structure. Mudejar, Baroque and Neoclassical features were added at a later date, creating a truly unique structure. The monastery is named after the Order of Saint Jerome (also known as the Hieronymites) that once lived and worshipped here.

Nowadays you can take a guided tour, family tour or night tour of the monastery. As soon as you step inside, you will find yourself marvelling at the entrance patio, the orange patio, the Mudejar cloister, the old church with a Baroque chapel, olive oil mill, grain store, stables and the old monks’ kitchen. We'd then recommend taking a wander around the beautiful Romanesque gardens. San Jerónimo de Cotalba monastery is a peaceful place where you can stroll around and soak up all the beauty.
