The Torre de Busot, the Busot Tower, in Busot, Alicante, is a defensive structure located on the route linking the town with Aigües, set within an inland, mountainous landscape. Its original purpose was to protect the local population of the area.
Features of the Busot Tower
The tower is a watchtower with a prismatic design, a square floor plan, and a sloping base measuring around two and a half metres, which adapts to the rocky terrain on which it stands. The upper sections of the tower feature slightly inclined faces.
Although its exact construction date is unknown, it has been established that the base is built from ashlar masonry, while the upper levels are made of irregular stonework, rendered with lime and sand mortar and finished with battlements.
Inside the Busot Tower, a narrow spiral staircase leads to the terrace, with two intermediate floors and a possible cistern located in the lower section. Access is positioned on the first floor, reinforcing its defensive function.
All indications suggest that the tower was originally a standalone structure, to which residential elements were added at a later stage. It remains a valuable testimony to the area’s past. There is plenty to see in Busot—be sure to include a visit to the Canelobre Caves and the town’s castle of Islamic origin in your itinerary.
