Valencian carnival traditions
The richness of Valencian carnivals lies in their sheer variety. When it comes to large-scale parades, the best known is Vinaròs Carnival, famous for its comparsas and spectacular costumes. But the province offers many more unmissable celebrations. Discover the deep-rooted, almost ancestral spirit of carnival in Morella, the seaside flavour of the festivities in El Grao de Castelló de la Plana, or the lively celebrations in Alcalà de Xivert–Alcossebre.
In the Russafa neighbourhood of València city, carnival bursts into colour with parades and fantastic live music. For those who love long-standing traditions, Villar del Arzobispo stands out as one of the oldest carnivals in Spain, with unique and delightfully quirky customs. Also worth mentioning are the historic carnival in Requena, known for its witty verse competitions, the flour battle in Bèlgida, and the celebrations in Ayora.
In the province of Alicante, carnival is celebrated with real passion. Pego is famous for its carefree vibe, while Torrevieja and Santa Pola fill with thousands of people enjoying dancing and music. In the city of Alicante itself, the carnival spirit takes over completely with major events such as Sábado Ramblero, Dijous de Gras and the Correfoc, the Burial of the Sardine, and Piñata Sunday, among many others.
