The Region of Valencia is home to natural scenery that truly stays with you. Explore some of its most remarkable protected landscapes and see nature at its best.

The protected landscapes of the Region of Valencia are natural spaces whose striking beauty and cultural value deserve special care and attention. And we’d love you to experience them first-hand. Here’s a taste of what awaits you in each one.

Protected landscapes in the Region of Valencia

We begin in Castellón with the Protected Landscape of the Millars River Mouth. The river’s final stretch forms a true ecological haven, dotted with lagoons, reed beds and wet meadows. And it is home to a rich variety of wildlife and birds. Its favourable surroundings encouraged early settlements, and today the area is scattered with charming little hermitages.

Between Valencia and Alicante lies the Ombria del Benicadell, the lush, north-facing slope of a beautiful mountain range blanketed in dense pine forests. On the opposite side sits La Solana del Benicadell, equally protected and just as captivating. Together, these landscapes bring together dramatic geological formations, natural springs and historic remains such as castles, watchtowers and old snow wells. Today, it’s an ideal spot for hiking and climbing, where nature and heritage coalesce in a setting steeped in character and history.

The Protected Landscape of the Serpis, stretching between Alcoy and Gandia, blends mountains, riverbanks and historic towns in perfect balance. Terraced fields, woodland and gorges create a varied backdrop that supports unique wildlife, while walking routes and traces of industrial heritage reveal centuries of Mediterranean life shaped by both nature and human endeavour.

In Alicante, you’ll find some of the Region of Valencia’s most evocative protected landscapes. Les Sorts, for instance, is a wine-growing valley in Teulada-Moraira, while the stunning Sierra de Bernia and Ferrer extends across Benissa, Xaló, Altea, Calp, Alcalalí, Tàrbena and Callosa d’en Sarrià. This area hides treasures such as the Renaissance-era Fort of Bèrnia, along with traditional farmhouses, rugged ridges and ancient terraces carved into the land.

There’s still more to explore, including the Sierra de Maigmó and Sierra del Sit, where you can seek out historic snow wells or try your hand at rock climbing, and the Sierra Escalona and its surroundings in the Vega Baja region.

We round off our journey through the protected landscapes of the Region of Valencia at Puigcampana and Ponotx, between Finestrat, Benidorm, La Nucia and Polop. This mountain scenery, wild and striking, offers a beauty unlike anywhere else. Come and see it for yourself! You certainly won’t regret it.
